Keep avocados fresh for longer with cheap method using just 24p fruit | Express.co.uk

A food storage expert has shared an easy and affordable hack to keep avocados fresh and without turning brown for longer.

Sharing his tips and tricks with Express.co.uk, Karl Graham at Click Storage said: “Only a few materials are needed to extend its life and continue enjoying this delicious fruit, all while absorbing its healthy benefits.”

Let your avocados ripen on the countertop at room temperature, and then, you can determine if an avocado is ripe by gently pressing it; if it gives slightly, it’s ready to eat.

Once your avocados are ripe, cut them in half and lightly brush the flesh with lime or lemon juice, which costs as little as 24p.

The citrus juice contains citric acid, which helps slow the oxidation process that leads to browning.

Karl explained: “When avocados are exposed to air, enzymes in the fruit react with oxygen, turning the flesh brown.

“The citric acid in citrus juice helps to inhibit these enzymes, preserving the green colour of the avocado.”

And if you want to ensure your avocado is at your preferred level of ripeness before opening it, life hack guru Sidney Raz shared his preferred method.

The TikTok content creator Sidney Raz, boasting almost five million fans and just shy of 147 million likes, likes to use "peek holes”, which are a telltale sign an avocado is ripe for the taking.

In a video shared online, he reveals: "Here's something I wish I knew before I was in my 30s. How to tell when an avocado is ripe enough to eat.”

He then explains: "They have peek holes." Here the TikTokker is referring to the pip at the top of the avocado which is usually removed when peeling the fruit.

The TikTokker continues: "Pop these off. This one looks ready, this one looks next closest to being ready and this one looks the farthest from being ready."

He pointed to each avocado in order of ripeness as there is a little "peek hole" at the top of the fruit once the pip has been removed and this is how to tell the ripeness of the fruit without cutting into it.
